Release #2 is ready
First of all, thanks to everyone who donated - the Supercard arrived monday and I was able to test and make the changes necessary to add in an appended filesystem for flashcart users and people who have fat library incompatible devices.
Changes in this version:
—————————
- Disks are loaded at startup in the order of their filenames ( disk0.dsk, disk1.dsk, ect… )
- Added romdiskfs build
- Added disk in SRAM for romdiskfs build
As a side note, I have been looking into using the Supercard’s extra ram as a possible method of 4mb emulation.
The first few tests I have done (not with vMac) have been successful and I will begin to do some more tests in the near future.
Mini vMac DS - Release #2
Let me know if there are any problems.
[Added]
You will need to supply your own disk image fir this build aswell, check out my tutorial:

Works like a dream
fantastic.
August 2nd, 2006 at 4:36 am
Doesn’t work on my EZFlash IV Lite. Boots up in GBA mode, then freezes.
I made the disk image, and all that.
August 2nd, 2006 at 4:41 am
I have no idea why it would start up in gba mode, maybe your flashing software does something weird to the file?
If there are some additional tools I need to build mini vmac with to get it working for that device let me know.
August 2nd, 2006 at 5:01 am
I sent the file with the flashing software, and by just copying it directly to the MicroSD card, same result each time. I don’t think there are additional tools, a fair amount of .ds.gba homebrew works on the EZFlash IV.
August 2nd, 2006 at 1:59 pm
Great work, I like it very much!
zedrac:
I had the the same problem on Supercard Lite, it seems that it uses the file extension to identify the ROM type. Simply renaming the file from “filename.ds.gba” to “filename.nds” solved the problem, I didn’t use the patcher. Perhaps this helps on EZFlash IV Lite, too.

Help, I am using Supard card sd ver. When booting up in ds, Mini Mac says: Sorry, a system error occurred. Illegal instruction.
August 25th, 2006 at 11:28 pm
opps. how can I edit the msg??
August 26th, 2006 at 6:34 pm
rorixbladewing5: The two disks can be found in the 1.4mb system 6.0.8 images on Apple’s site.
Make sure you download them correctly using the instructions I gave in the tutorial.
star7: Use the build for flashcarts on your Supercard SD, a new version which will support reading from the SD will be coming shortly.
August 28th, 2006 at 3:53 am
Lazyone: Sorry, i was reffering to the OS 7.x files. 6.0.8 works fine.
September 3rd, 2006 at 7:27 am
[…] Lazyone managed to get MAC OS 7.5 running on his Nintendo DS using MiniVMacDS. Just a quick note, you’ll need to “supply your own Macintosh Plus ROM inorder for this to do anything, and [you] must have a device supported by chishm’s FAT library.” Video demonstration after the jump. Download the program here. […]

I cant seem to get this to work. I have an m3 mini sd. I did everything stated in the file and it loads with just the mouse and nothing else.
September 10th, 2006 at 8:59 am
You can try using the flashcart build/instructions, I have updated to the latest fat library so the next release should support more devices reading/writing to the CF/SD.
For the flashcart build you must remember that your system disk will be read only, you will have a 64kb disk in SRAM though if you want to save something.
September 11th, 2006 at 12:34 pm
It works very good.
Why not use the Nintendo DS Screen in the “landscape mode”?
256 x 192
+256 x 192
=512×384
It’s nearly Macintosh Plus display resolution (512*342). The keyboard and the trackpad could be overlaid on the touch screen.
–dietmar
September 11th, 2006 at 5:36 pm
Because holding the DS sideways gives a resolution of only 384×256 not 512×384.
It may be possible to use subpixel rendering to fit the entire screen onto the DS’s display, but I’m not sure how that would look.
September 12th, 2006 at 11:27 am
Yes, sorry for the calculation
But using both screens would still be very nice.
September 12th, 2006 at 11:40 am
BTW one the original Macintosh design had a 384 x 256 resolution:

Ha!
September 13th, 2006 at 3:29 pm
where can i find these flashcart build/instructions?
September 13th, 2006 at 6:33 pm
Check “windows instructions.txt” in the archive I posted, come to think of it I should have named that differently.
September 27th, 2006 at 3:01 am
Hey guys, I am currently experiencing an issue with this program. I have followed the instructions and restarted the whole entire installation multiple times, yet it’s not working. Everytime I run genromfs.exe I recieve the following error:

The .nds file loads fine. My Mac Plus ROM loads and the Mac bootup starts but NO startdisk is found.
I get the flashing “?” . I ahve tried renaming the Startupdisk (tried both 6.0.8 and 7.0) to mac_hd.img instead of disk0.dsk but no luck. I ahve the ROM file the -nds file and the diskimage with the Mac Os in the root.
I use a DS-X cart with firmware 1.0.2.
It’s like minivmac.nds can’t “see” the Mac Os boot-diskimage.
Advice?
January 4th, 2007 at 3:40 pm
I am going to try to get this running on my SC SD when it arrives. I have used MiniVMac on my Macbook to run OS7, should be fun on the DS. Keep up the good work, and glad to see you listed as an official port on the MiniVMac website:
http://minivmac.sourceforge.net/
Great! Now, have you considered porting CoPilot, xCoPilot or POSE?
THOSE would ROCk on the DS… original system had only 160×160 screen resolution, and the apps available are well suited to a handheld device
January 4th, 2007 at 3:50 pm
Can you add a “Donation” link back onto the website? Maybe even multiple links, one to donate to general development, and other links dedicated to your purchased of specific HW for testing/support (for example, I would contribute to the SC DS purchase for you, while others might want to contribute to you purchasing M3 h/w).
Many thanks for your efforts- I hope you see this through multiple releases and improvements.
January 10th, 2007 at 11:40 am
Well, I get the same results as Montero. Using the Supercard SD w/Rumble I get a flashing “?” diskette in the middle of the screen. One thing I did try was renaming the “System Startup” floppy to disk0.dsk, which seemed to _try_ to boot (got the bootup dialog), but then failed with an “illegal instruction” of some sort, asking me to reset.
I too simply placed the .NDS file, the .DSK file and the .ROM file all in the root of the SD card.
Montero- did you (or anyone else) ever figure it out? I’m REALLY looking forward to playing with this.
January 10th, 2007 at 12:03 pm
I should also add that I tried both the straight NDS method and the flashcart/SCSD method (all-in-one file according to instructions), and both give me the flashing “?” disk.
Let us all know how we can contribute to pushing this to the next version!
January 13th, 2007 at 8:44 pm
Only Mac OS 1.1 and Mac OS 4.1 (usind SC-SD). 1.1f1.1 works better than 4.1f5.5.

First I want to say thanks for making an awsome emulator, those old macs were brilliant.Looking really good.
I’ve been trying to get this to run inside dualis but it won’t recognize my startup disk. I just really want to see the speed at which it runs(I’m trying to decide what handheld to buy,but really want a DS). I know I’m doing everything correctlly. After a week, I finally figured out how to convert those .SIT files to something vmac 6.0.8 can use. I’ve tested everything within vMac for windows. I’ve checked out vMac at 7.5 and I think staying at system 6 is the only way unless you can get more ram.
If the compatibilty is the same as regular mini vMac, then this could be the emulator to have for the ds, especially if the speed can be raised.
thanks again, lazyone! keep up the great work.
February 9th, 2007 at 2:15 am
Thanks for the mini vMac. It’s awesome! Now that I got it to work, I would like to put some software in it. How can I install, like games, to the mac hd? I have the m3 lite & Passcard 3.

Which file is the “mac_romdisk.bin”? I can’t seem to find it, and what should I do with the “mac_hd.img”? I have just created the file, and then I ran the “bin\genromfs -f mac_romdisk.bin -d data -V vMac” and it generated a new “mac_hd.img” file, which cannot be opened in Mini vMac. What should I do with this file?
March 26th, 2007 at 5:09 am
imec:
Write “bin\genromfs -f mac_romdisk.bin -d data -V vMac” while your in the Mini vMac folder. Do not write “genromfs -f mac_romdisk.bin -d data -V vMac” while your in the bin folder. I experienced the same problem, but this solved it. The new mac_hd.img will be in the Mini vMac folder.

i’m trying to get mini vmac working on my ds with my supercard lite (microsd). when i try to start it, i just get a floppy icon with a flashing question mark (i’m assuming this means it can’t find the disk image). i have a 24mb disk image with system 6.0.8 installed on it named disk0.dsk, and minivmac.nds and vMac.ROM in the root directory of my microsd card. any suggestions?
May 29th, 2007 at 5:41 am

I haven’t had much luck with my Supercard Lite Rumble. I can get minivmac.nds to boot no problem, and it starts to laod up fine, untill i get a Disk with a question mark in the middle of the screen and nothing else happens.
And I have also tried the GBA Flashcart instructions, but as soo as i boot that up, all i get is “Error: Failed to initialize file system”
Would be because Supercard Lite Rumble doesnt have the extra memory like other Supercards? Otherwise could someone help, because i enjoyed using Mini vMac on my pc
June 14th, 2007 at 7:42 pm

June 14th, 2007 at 7:44 pm

I’m having a weird problem. When I run the .nds file I get a black screen on top but I see the “1:1 mouse movement” screen on the bottom. I can switch modes with the L and R buttons but even if I wait a while nothing appears on screen. I am using an R4DS.
I also have an EZ Flash 3in1 so I followed the windows install instructions and transfered the .gba file to the EZ Flash. That worked except that it said that the disk was not initialized for some reason.
I have no idea how to fix either problem. For the first problem, I have no feedback at all so I don’t know what to do. In the second problem the disk0.dsk and vMac.ROM are both in the /data/ folder.
What am I doing wrong?
July 16th, 2007 at 5:21 am
i have an r4ds and i am having the same problem as iamcommie.
-i have created a bootable mac_hd, renamed it disk0.dsk and i have dldi patched minivmacds, and yet after placing
vMac.ROM
disk0.dsk
minivmacds.nds
in the root of my card it shows the same screen iamcommie saw:
a black screen on the top, with a 1:1 mouse movement on the lower.
am i placing the files in the wrong place? if so, where do i place them - it was not clear in the readme.
Please help!

I keep getting a memory error with slot 2, guess you need a ram expansion =( Anyway heres a tutorial to set up on Games ‘N’ Music - Sure it will work with other .NDS readers.
================================================
1. Download vMac os 6.0.8 DS v1.0.rar from http://kintesh.110mb.com/nds_dsapps.htm and extract the files.
2. Go online and look for the ROM file, its illegal to share it so I can’t give you a direct link, but I’m sure google has it.
3. Download Mini vMac for your operating system from http://minivmac.sourceforge.net/download.html and extract the files.
4. Run Mini vMac (Computer Version) and click File, Open Disk Image. Then locate and load Disk0.dsk.
5. Double click on the System Startup Icon the desktop, make sure everything works.
6. Now you want a harddrive, go and download Dummy File Creator
http://www.mynikko.com/dummy/ and extract it.
7. Install the creator or extract it, whatever version you downloaded and double click to run the program.
8. With dummy file creator make a file named mac_hd.img from 5-200mb in size. Place that and create it somewhere you wont forget.
9. Load mac_hd.img you just made onto the Mini vMac Computer Version a error will pop up saying this is not a mac disk. Initailize it. Then it will say it will erase all data on it, erase it. Now put in the name of the harddrive you would like. Now you have a new icon on the desktop which can be used as a hard disk.
10. Drag and drop the vMac.rom, Disk0.dsk and Mini vMac.nds to your ds cartridge and wala! You should have a working version of mini vmac!
(Without the extra harddisk then you only get about 50Kb of room!)
If a memory error comes up like it does on mine then I don’t know what to tell yeah because I get the error too lol. I think you need a slot 2 (GBA) ram extesion cartrage which would REALLY suck because there expensive. =( Feel free to add onto this if you have problems / easier ways of doing things! Also: the System Startup should have a folder that is named ‘Apps’ that has MacDraw and MacPaint in it. Enjoy! -Version 3.0 on the kintesh.110mb.com website has a butt load of games if you want those-
